How do you calculate GST?

GST in Australia is 10% of the price before GST. To add GST, multiply the GST-exclusive amount by 1.1. To find the GST inside a GST-inclusive amount, divide it by 11, which is the same as taking one-eleventh. A $1,100 invoice including GST contains $100 of GST and $1,000 before GST.

$100$10$110
$1,000$100$1,100
$10,000$1,000$11,000
$100,000$10,000$110,000

Who has to charge GST?

Businesses must register for GST when their GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or $150,000 for non-profit organisations, and taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register regardless of turnover. Once registered, you include GST in the price of taxable sales, issue tax invoices and report it on your business activity statement. Some sales, such as most basic food and many health and education services, are GST-free.

What about GST credits on business purchases?

A registered business can usually claim back the GST included in the price of things it buys for the business, as long as it holds a valid tax invoice. That's why the GST on a vehicle or machine bought with a chattel mortgage can usually be claimed on your next BAS.

Setting GST aside

The simplest habit for staying on top of GST is to move one-eleventh of every GST-inclusive sale into a separate account when the money arrives. GST that's spent on wages or suppliers before the BAS is due is how many GST debts start, and unpaid GST can make company directors personally liable.

Questions

GST calculator: common questions

How do I work out GST from a total?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11 to find the GST. For example, $550 including GST contains $50 of GST, leaving $500 before GST. Dividing the total by 1.1 gives the GST-exclusive price directly.

What is 10% GST on $1,000?

GST on $1,000 is $100, so the price including GST is $1,100. If $1,000 is already the GST-inclusive price, the GST included is $90.91 and the price before GST is $909.09.

Do I have to register for GST?

You must register when your business's GST turnover is $75,000 or more a year, or $150,000 for non-profits, and taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register whatever their turnover. Below the threshold, registering is optional. Your accountant can tell you whether registering early makes sense.

Is GST charged on commercial property?

Usually, yes, when a GST-registered seller sells commercial property, unless the sale qualifies as a GST-free going concern. Buyers who are registered for GST can generally claim the GST back, but they need the funds until the credit comes through. Get advice before signing the contract.
